Finally had an occasion where I used the flap on this hat and it really worked great.The flap tucks underneath the hat until you need it and then it really snugs up tight over the ears. It looks dorkey with the flaps down but it really does block the wind and snow. Unlike a watch cap pulled down, nothing gets through the flap - pretty good if you have sensitive ears. I'd order it a little bigger than what you normally would order as the flap folded under takes a little more space than a normal, flapless cap.
